80th Anniversary East Kent Ploughing Match
Back
On Wednesday, 24th September, Great Oaks Small School students enjoyed a fantastic day out at the 80th Anniversary East Kent Ploughing Match, held this year at Quex Park in Birchington. This much-anticipated annual event truly has something for everyone, and our students certainly made the most of the day!
When we arrived, there were activities and sights on offer for all ages and interests. Students explored the many ploughing classes watching impressive horse-drawn, steam, vintage, classic, and modern commercial ploughs in action.
But the fun didn’t stop there. Students got hands-on and had a go at traditional rural competitions like Tossing the Sheaf and Welly Throwing. Many tried their hand at archery some students tried clay pigeon shooting. Others joined in metal detecting, searching for old coins and objects hidden beneath the ground and all students watched thrilling dog agility runs and terrier racing.
Students explored tents filled with arts, crafts, and cookery, while others browsed the stalls and exhibitions.Throughout the trip, our school’s theme for the day—“Be Kind, Be Curious, Be You”—Students supported each other, asked thoughtful questions, and confidently embraced every new experience.
A big thank you to all staff and volunteers who helped organise the visit, and to the wonderful hosts at Quex Park and the East Kent Ploughing Match Association for an inspiring and memorable day out.
